I am a travel journalist, novelist, writer.
Co-publisher of the award-winning green travel blog, Green Traveler Guides. Co-author of the award-winning green e-guide Green Traveler Guides Hawaii.
I was born in Ohio, schooled in New Jersey and New York, and live on a houseboat in Sausalito, California. That is, when I’m not on the road in search of the world’s best green travel.
As a travel journalist, I’ve written for many magazines and newspapers. I’ve written travel guides for Fodor’s and Bantam Books.
As a regular kind of journalist, I once asked a man on his way to becoming one of the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted, “Tony, is it true you bomb people?” I prevailed upon presidential aspirant and Congressman Dennis Kucinich to judge a pizza-eating contest. Kucinich, then a Cleveland city councilman, declared the winner to be a very hungry German Shepherd. (The dog also ate the pizza box.)
Oh, yeah. I’ve also worked as a radio newsman, a newspaper reporter, and edited magazines in Los Angeles, Detroit and Cleveland.
When not writing, traveling, or rising and falling with the tides, I occasionally sell vegetables for an organic farmer and am active in supporting Slow Food, Marin Organics and the Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT).
Hello, Gary…
I am sure you are the same Gary Diedrichs I knew from CCM when I was at BFGoodrich in Akron. In April, my wife and I were in the Depot Bookstore in MV and I saw your Earthquake Shack book. I am reading it now and enjoying it. It was interesting early on to learn the origin of Richardson Bay. I have overlooked it many times staying at the Howard Johnson / Holiday Inn / Larkspur Inn on Shorline at 101 over the years since 1987. I have also frequented — shall I say “occasioned” the No Name on a few visits. For years I had a cousin in Walnut Creek and now have a daughter and her family in Sacramento, which resulted in my visits to Marin. I sneak over to MV and environs every chance I get. I expect to be back in early August and would welcome the chance to buy you a beverage of your choice at the No Name and have you autograph the Earthquake Shack for me. Let me know if that works for you and I will try to finalize my itinerary. I can then add your book to my other two autographed California books — both recipe books signed by Annie Somerville at Greens in SF.
Best regards,
Don Husat

Ah the life you have! Sunny all the time while I struggle through midwest winters! You should tell the stories about your time at Cleveland magazine covering the mob, exposing after hours joints. A real adventure! What is Earthquake Shack?
